Goddaughter of funk singer Rick James, she was hired by Motown Records in 1975 and released their debut album four years later. The album, which was mostly written by James, has led fans to believe that Teena was black, since the art did not include your photo.
Two of his albums, "It must be magic" (1981) and "Starchild" (1984), achieved gold record in the United States to exceed 500 thousand units each, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
"Starchild", released after Marie leave Motown for a legal dispute, yielded the hit "Lovergirl", which reached number four on the Hot 100. "Ooo La La La" reached number # 1 on black music in 1988.
